New Year, New You: Smoothie Recipe & Yoga Video!

Happy New Year, everyone! It’s amazing how with the drop of the ball you can feel like your whole slate is wiped clean! Fresh starts are a great time to reevaluate what things can be changed in your life for the positive.

I started the first day of 2017 with a quick smoothie recipe, yoga video, and some at-home-spa treatments! So refreshing!

Smoothie Recipe:

  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 grapefruit
  • Yogurt
  • Handful of spinach leaves
  • Dab of honey

Add your ingredients to a blender (I use my Ninja) until smooth. This smothie has a tropical taste thanks to the grapefruit. Just add a tropical umbrella and pretend you’re at the beach!

Here is the yoga video I did this morning as well:

Weight Loss Yoga for Beginners

It’s not too intense, but does give a little bit of strength exercises to make you feel great!

How the KonMari Method Changed My Life (The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up)!

I’ve done previous posts on my attempts at cleaning out my closet. While my intentions were always good, I just never seemed to get a clean closet. It was still messy, cluttered, & overstuffed. I’ve tried various closet cleaning strategies, including “if you haven’t worn it in 6 months, toss it,” and “if you saw this in a store would you buy it again,” but these strategies were unsuccessful attempts that left me feeling like I may use something in the future. I just couldn’t let things go. Then I started reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Mari Kondo.

 :

Let me say I didn’t expect much from this book. I mean, there are so many books out there that claim a perfectly cleaned home, usually referencing the above mentioned strategies. I had high hopes, but wasn’t convinced. Boy, was I wrong! Before I get into details, please, read this book! It is life-changing!

Summary

This book was written by a Japanese woman who spent the majority of her life trying to find ways of creating a perfectly clean, organized space. But she never felt like her space was clean, until one day she had an epiphany. Instead of getting rid of items that you don’t like, you need to focus on the ones you love, or that bring joy. That’s her main philosophy.

  • Does It Spark Joy? This is the main focus of the KonMari Method (coined from the author’s name). You must place all items of a category in a pile, then one-by-one hold the item and ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” As weird as this sounds, you really start to focus on what makes you happy, and what you can live without.
My discard pile. This wasn't even all of it!

My discard pile. This wasn’t even all of it!

  • Go By Category, Not Room Typically, when cleaning out spaces, we go by rooms. For example, you try to clean your bedroom first. But Kondo believes this is where people fall short when attempting to clean their spaces. She has a set order for discarding your items: Clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellany), and finally sentimental items. Going in this order allows you to hone your decision-making skills, because you start with the items of the least emotional attachment, making it a lot more simple to discard by the time you get to the last category.
  • Discard First, Tidy Last You must go through each category, by the KonMari Method, before you find a place for your things. You can only find a place for the items that spark joy once you have gone through every item in that category. Otherwise, you end up putting things away before you have discarded everything. This results in clutter. When you don’t have a specific place for each item, you end up placing it anywhere in your home. This defeats the purpose of cleaning/tidying.
  • Fold and Store the KonMari Way This is so important! Kondo has a specific way of putting away clothing. Only heavy items (coats, jackets, dresses), and flowy items (blouses) that look better hung should be hanging in your closet. Otherwise, fold it. However, she also folds a specific way that allows for more room in your drawers, and gives you an appreciation for your clothing. It teaches you to handle each item with care, and lets you see if an item has wear or needs to be discarded from being overused. Here is a great series of videos that specifically shows her method, which was difficult to visualize while reading the book. When you find that “sweet spot,” it feels so good! Do this!

  • Tidying Is Life Changing After going through my clothes, I feel so much lighter! I got rid of about four trash bags full of clothes. I didn’t think I’d be able to get rid of anything. But this method of tidying is seriously life-changing. My mind is more clear, I’m able to pick out an outfit in about thirty seconds, and it just looks prettier in my closet! ๐Ÿ™‚

Winter Fun & Surviving Snow Storm Jonas!ย

I survived snow storm Jonas! I hope everyone was safe & warm during this blizzard! Luckily we didn’t end up losing power. Tomorrow will be six days of being cooped up in the house. While I love my apartment, it feels small after almost a week of being snowed in. Tonight, my fiancรฉ & I are going out to eat at a restaurant near by. It will be nice to venture out, because cabin fever is real, & it’s not fun! Rumor has it that another snow storm is on the horizon, set to take place Thursday or Friday. I’m hoping that it’s not anywhere near the amounts of Jonas, so let’s keep our fingers crossed! Some things I did while being cooped up:

Star Wars Trivia Game

Movies

Netflix

Reading

Champagne

Call Of Duty (my fiancรฉ has me hooked)

Cooking

Trekking through the Snow

Nancy Drew Computer Games

Comment below with how you survived the snow storm! I’m really curious, because other ideas would be great for any future storms! ๐Ÿ™‚

10 Must Do Christmas Traditions!

 :

I’ve always thought of Christmas as a magical time. The lights, the smells, the gifts. This time of year is just so different from the rest. For many of us, it’s a great time to incorporate Christmas traditions. Whether you realize you have them or not, most of us do something special during the Christmas season that has become a tradition. I’ve listed my top 10 must do Christmas traditions that are sure to add the Christmas spirit to your holiday. Enjoy!

1. Bake Cookies ~ Whether for yourself or someone else, cookies are a perfect way to celebrate the holidays. The classics are sugar, gingerbread, & shortbread.

2. Buy Gifts ~ Many people start long before the temperature gets cold outside. Sadly, I’m not one of those people. I take advantage of all the holiday sales, & tend to shop for gifts right up until Christmas.

3. Wrap Presents ~ Check out my recent postย for wrapping tips & tricks!

4. Put Up Your Tree ~ One of my favorite traditions, I love having my tree up right after Thanksgiving. That way I can enjoy the lights for as long as possible.

5. Play in the Snow ~ This season doesn’t look likeย I’ll get much snow anytime soon. If you are lucky enough to enjoy a snow day, build a snowman, snow angels, & go sledding!

6. Watch a Christmas Movie ~ There are so many great Christmas movies to watch! I love It’s a Wonderful Life, I’ll Be Home for Christmas, & Meet Me In St. Louis.

7. Enjoy Family Time ~ Many people only get a chance to see family during the holidays. Take advantage of that time together, & don’t forget to take pictures.

8. Exchange Gifts with Friends ~ My bestie & I just exchanged our Christmas gifts. We enjoyed an Audrey Hepburn movie & champagne. Taking time for your friends is so important during the holiday rush!

9. Kiss Under the Mistletoe ~ One of the more romantic traditions. Find your special someone & enjoy a magical mistletoe kiss!

10. Start Your Own Christmas Traditions ~ Making your own traditions during the holidays makes them that much more special!

5 Ways to Better Your Morning Routine!

I’m lucky enough to be a morning person. I’ve never had an issue with getting up early, in fact I rather enjoy it. I like being up while everyone else is asleep. I feel like I can get a lot of things done, & prepare myself for the rest of the day. However, when it’s a work day….Ugh.

morning3.png

My motivation is diminished in the morning when I have to go to work, knowing there is a long day ahead of me. So how do I keep my morning person happiness? Planning. I have five ways to help make my mornings a little bit smoother. This makes the rest of my day feel put-together, & I don’t dread my work day as much!

  1. Automatic Coffee Maker: This is something that everyone may not have, but if you do it’s a life saver! I have a Black & Decker coffee maker that I am able to auto start for before I roll out of bed. That way, when I wake up my coffee is all ready! Just be sure to set it up the night before. ๐Ÿ˜‰
  2. Plan Your Outfit: This is were I lack a lot of the time. Look up the weather the night before, then pick out your outfit accordingly. This will help you save five minutes of, “Maybe this dress?” “Do these pants still fit?” “Where is my cardigan??” Trust me, that could be five minutes of extra sleep.
  3. Finish Something on Your To-Do List: The night before a long work day, I like to have something marked off my to-do list for the next day. Maybe I’ll do a load of laundry, a college assignment, or have the dishes cleaned. This really helps me feel like the next day won’t be as difficult to tackle.
  4. Mini Clean: I save my huge cleaning things for the weekends, but doing a ten minute clean the night before work can make you feel so great in the morning! I like to have my sink empty, my floors swept (if it needs it), & my counters cleared. This clears your mind and offers a more restful sleep.
  5. Pre-Pack Your Lunch: If you take lunch to work, packing the night before is such a great way to have an easy morning. It also helps with keeping your meals healthy. Rather than grabbing a granola bar or a slice of leftover pizza, you have a better chance of packing a healthy salad or sandwich.
Hopefully this will help you with your morning routine! Comment below with how you like to get ready for your mornings!
